Early life and background
Kumar was born in Amritsar, India to Hariom Bhatia and Aruna Bhatia. His father was a military officer. From an early age, Kumar was recognized as an artist, particularly as a dancer. He lived and grew up in Chandni Chowk in Delhi and later moved to Mumbai where he lived in Koliwara, a Punjabi-dominated area. He did his schooling from Don Bosco School and enrolled in Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Mumbai for higher education, but dropped out after a year and moved to Bangkok to learn martial arts. Kumar also has a sister, Alka Bhatia. When Kumar was a teenager, his father asked him what he wanted to become. Kumar expressed his desire to become an actor.
After obtaining a black belt in Taekwondo while living in India, he studied martial arts in Bangkok, Thailand, where he learned Muay Thai and worked as a chef and waiter. Returning to Mumbai, he started teaching martial arts. One of his students, an aspiring photographer, recommended Kumar in modeling, which eventually led to a modeling assignment. Kumar effectively earned more money in the first two days of shooting than his full month's salary and so he opted for a modeling career. He worked as an assistant to photographer Jayesh Sheth for 18 months without paying for his first portfolio shoot. She also acted as a background dancer in various films. One morning, he missed his flight for an ad-shoot in Bangalore. Frustrated with himself, he visited a film studio with his portfolio. That evening Kumar was signed for the lead role by producer Pramod Chakraborty for the film Didar.
